Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are integral to our mission.

We work to ensure everyone, without distinction or discrimination, anywhere in the world, can enjoy the benefits of progress in science and its applications.

In this spirit, we have created and follow the following guidelines around DEI.

A.  General principles:

  1. Science for Democracy acknowledges the nature of science as a systematic and collaborative endeavor, built upon a diverse range of epistemic perspectives. It recognizes that embracing this plurality is crucial for the advancement of scientific knowledge. Committed to the principles of diversity and inclusion, the organization endeavors to promote these values in all facets of its work.
  2. The organization acknowledges that diverse perspectives and inclusive practices are integral to driving innovation, ensuring fair and equal access to scientific advancements, and fostering an equitable distribution of benefits derived from scientific progress. In line with this commitment, the organization actively seeks to promote diversity in its activities and in its funding allocation processes, recognizing the importance of supporting initiatives and projects that represent a wide range of voices, experiences, and backgrounds.
  3. The organization is dedicated to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all its members and stakeholders. It aims to foster an atmosphere that respects and values the contributions of individuals from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and identities.


B.  Implementation:

  1. Fundings and initiatives:
    1. The organization supports members’ initiatives that address barriers and challenges faced by individuals from marginalized or underrepresented groups, aiming to ensure equal access to resources, opportunities, and recognition in the scientific community.
    2. The organization proactively seeks opportunities to support initiatives and projects that promote diversity, equality, and inclusion in the scientific community.
    3. When evaluating funding proposals, the organization considers the extent to which the proposed initiatives demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion, including the representation of underrepresented groups and the promotion of equal opportunities.
    4. The organization endeavors to allocate financial resources in a way that promotes active involvement and meaningful engagement from individuals and organizations with diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
    5. The organization establishes transparent and objective criteria for evaluating funding proposals to ensure fair consideration and equal opportunities for all applicants, regardless of their backgrounds.
  2. Collaborations and Partnerships:
    1. The organization actively seeks collaboration and partnerships with institutions, organizations, and individuals that share its mission and its commitment to diversity and inclusion.
    2. Collaborations and partnership agreements prioritize initiatives that promote diversity, equality, and inclusivity, and aim to create opportunities for underrepresented groups in the scientific community.
  3. Board of Directors and Executive functions:
    1. The organization acknowledges the importance of diversity within its Board of Directors and executive functions. It endeavors to have a diverse representation that reflects different backgrounds, expertise, and perspectives in executive roles.
    2. The organization actively seeks out individuals from diverse communities and underrepresented groups as candidates for positions within the Board of Directors and executive functions.
    3. The organization implements transparent and inclusive selection processes that promote equal opportunities for individuals from diverse backgrounds to serve in leadership roles
  4. Reporting and Accountability:
    1. The organization reports to its general assembly on its efforts and progress in promoting diversity and inclusion within its funding activities.
    2. The organization establishes mechanisms for receiving feedback and suggestions from stakeholders, including supporters, members, partners, and the wider scientific community, to continuously improve its practices and initiatives related to diversity and inclusion.
  5. Zero-tolerance for discriminatory behavior:
    1. The organization does not tolerate any form of discriminatory behavior or practices based on sex, gender, race, religion. sexual orientation, ethnicity, disability, or any other protected class. Discriminatory actions, including but not limited to harassment, bullying, or exclusion, will not be tolerated and may result in appropriate disciplinary measures, including revocation of membership.
