On March 8th, International Women’s Day was celebrated by Science for Democracy, in collaboration with Associazione Luca Coscioni, with the free events for teenagers; BLOSSOMING STEM OF WOMEN (in English) and EXACTA-MENTE MUJERES (in Spanish). Participating schools and people registered from across the world. Thus, from different continents, young students were able to hear from and interact with professionals with an education in STEM fields, who work in a variety of disciplines such as R&D for private companies, research in public universities and science communication.
The opening of the meetings began with a brief explanation of the Matilda Effect. The Matilda Effect is a sociocultural phenomenon whereby contributions made by women in the sciences were (and are) systematically attributed, throughout history, to men, or are considered of less relevance. This was followed by the speakers discussing their life, work and study experiences with the students. The students raised questions regarding the difficulties encountered as a woman in STEM fields and for being, in some cases, from countries with limited economic resources.
The initiative had the aim of contributing to the social change necessary to achieve the objectives of the United Nations and help adolescents to overcome stereotypes about gender, science and work.

El 8 de marzo fue celebrado por las Asociaciones Science for Democracy y Luca Coscioni con los eventos gratuitos para adolescentes EXACTA-MENTE MUJERES (en español) y BLOSSOMING STEM OF WOMEN (en inglés). Se registraron a la iniciativa escuelas y personas de diferentes Países. Así, desde diferentes continentes, lxs adolescentes pudieron escuchar nuestras oradoras, profesionales, con una educación en los campos STEM, que trabajan en diferentes áreas como I+D para empresas privadas, investigación en Universidades públicas, comunicación de la ciencia.
Los encuentros empezaron con una breve explicación del Efecto Matilda. El Efecto Matilda es un fenómeno sociocultural por lo cual contribuciones hechas por mujeres en las ciencias fueron (y son) sistemáticamente atribuidas, a lo largo de la historia, a hombres, o son consideradas de menor relevancia. Las oradoras intercambiaron sus experiencias de vidas, trabajo y estudio con lxs estudiantes de diferentes Países que avanzaron preguntas respecto de las dificultades encontradas por ser mujeres y por ser, en algunos casos, de Países con recursos económicos limitados.
Con esta iniciativa, las Asociaciones Science for Democracy y Luca Coscioni quieren contribuir al cambio social necesario para alcanzar los objetivos de las Naciones Unidas y ayudar a las y los adolescentes a superar los estereotipos sobre género, ciencias y trabajo.
